Just when you think you've seen everything...

Got a call about a few weeks ago from a young man who had a piece of Rookwood he couldn't identify. He told me a little about the vase and I tried to explain that it was a unique piece and that he probably would not find anything like it on eBay. Little did I know...

When he pulled the vase out of the box, I was stunned: A full signature Albert Valentien carved mat glaze vase with brightly colored orchids done in 1900. I explained that it was special, very special, so he agreed to consign it to our December sale. 

The vase is early and I'm not really sure what to call it other than "beautiful." It is definitely carved and the glaze colors remind me more of a Painted Mat than anything, even though Valentien's signature is incised and not in black slip.

Pictured are two brightly colored irises in relief that are both carved and painted by the artist. Marks include the Rookwood logo, the date, shape number 909 C and Valentien’s full signature. Height 8 5/8 inches. Uncrazed. est. $6000-$8000
