I love to talk and I love to write so this is going to be a ramble of sorts, combining the two elements into what I hope will be a seamless form. Critical comments are welcome and may even be published.
Humler & Nolan already has some good things for our December 1st and 2nd Auction, not the least of which are over 200 pieces form the Arthur and Rita Townley Collection.
Art and Rita were active members of the Pottery Lovers group in Zanesville and avid collectors. Their collection consists of some very interesting Rookwood and Zanesville pieces including Weller, Roseville and Owens along with a few European pieces.
The Townley’s are also very important to Rookwood having saved the company from being sold overseas in the late 1970’s and operating Rookwood on a limited basis until it was returned to Cincinnati and new ownership about 5 years ago. It can certainly be said that Art and Rita saved Rookwood.
Included in their collection are some amazing early examples of Rookwood including major Dull Finish and Limoges style pieces along with an original set of Union Terminal bookends.
Zanesville items include an important Della Robbia vase along with two Olympic items and a Tourist vase.
More on the Townley Collection and new arrivals next week.
