Lot No. 1384

Manufacturer: Rookwood

Artist: Albert Valentien

Description: Rare and Monumental Dull Finish vase executed by Albert Valentien in 1883. Featured are a spectacular pair of life size Luna moths, perhaps a male attracted by a female gliding the nighttime sky high above dark clumps of Oriental reeds. A handsome Underwing moth flutters nearby. The gray nightfall backdrop is highlighted by fired on gold highlights and patches of white enameling reminiscent of moonlit clouds. Measures 21 inches and 12 3/8 inches across the rim. Impressed ROOKWOOD 1883 with a kiln logo and G for ginger clay. The artist’s monogram along with the date is enameled on the side. I hate to overuse the term “Museum Quality” but the equally impressive mate to this vase resides in the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Estimate: $7,000.00 - $9,000.00
