Lot No. 1177

Manufacturer: Rookwood

Artist: Patti Conant

Description: Striking Rookwood Porcelain potpourri jar with decoration consisting of exotic flowers on a trellis with three blue butterflies done by Patti Conant in 1919 on a shape designed by her husband, Arthur Conant. The jar has an inner lid and a reticulated outer lid (with small birds as part of the reticulated design) to allow fragrance to escape. Marks include the company logo, the date, shape number 2451 and the impressed oval monogram of Mrs. Conant. Height 9 3/4 inches. Uncrazed and very clean. In a taped interview with Patti Conant in the late 1970’s, she did confess that Arthur occasionally sketched designs on vases for her to paint. If you see a similarity to Arthur’s work in this piece, that may be the explanation. Exhibited and pictured in color as item 80 in “Rookwood Pottery From the Collection of John H. Loetterle and G. William Stuart, Jr.” in 1978 at The Yuma Art Center, Yuma, Arizona.

Size: 9 3/4

Estimate: $2,500.00 - $3,500.00
