The Akron, a Navy airship operated from 1931 until 1933 when it crashed into the Atlantic following a violent thunderstorm. The photo is housed in the original duraluminum frame used in the ship’s girder construction by Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation. Signed in ink on the reverse. Size is 17 1/4 by 23 inches. There is very minor retouch in the sky, visible under close inspection and minor scratches to the duraluminum frame. Purchased in Christie’s New York sale of Photographs in February, 2004 as lot 112.
