Lot No. 1284

Manufacturer: Rookwood

Artist: William P. McDonald

Description: Rare scenic landscape depicting two cows and a herder on a wooded field, nicely detailed by William McDonald in 1894 and covered with the elusive Aerial Blue Glaze. Impressed with the Rookwood symbol, which indicates the date, shape 741 C, and the number 273, the trial mark of ceramic engineer Joseph Bailey, bracketed by incised crescent moons. The decorator’s monogram is also incised. There are red acquisition numbers from the Cincinnati Art Museum and an old, illegible partial label affixed to the side. There is light overall crazing. The Aerial Blue Glaze was introduced in 1894 and was discontinued within a year and examples are quite rare. Height is 5 1/2 inches. The vase is listed in Burt’s “2,282 Pieces of Early Rookwood Pottery in the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1916” as item 21 on page 108.

Size: 5 1/2

Estimate: $4,000.00 - $6,000.00
