Lot No. 0610

Manufacturer: Handel

Description: Extraordinary Handel reverse painted nautical scenic lamp. The rare 15 inch shade has horizontal ribbing separated by vertical ridges on the exterior. The interior is handsomely hand decorated with a fleet of ten stunning Clipper ships navigating the high seas with seagulls leading the way. The sky and rough water are done in pinks, purples and amethyst, the ships with whitish billowing sails. Enamel signed “Handel 5887” on the interior of the rim and artist signed with the initial “R”, possibly for Runge. The shade is topped with a bronze interlocking ring impressed “Handel” with patent number 979664”. There are seven small chips plus a few nicks to the lower interior rim that does not effect the exterior. The slight ribbed bronze base has a four lobed feet with green felt beneath fixed with a woven cloth label reading “Handel” in block letters. The lamp is equipped with three original Hubbell light sockets and pull chains tipped with bronze acorns. Height is 24 inches. An image of this style Handel shade, in floral design, is represented in “The Painted Lamps of Handel” by Joanne C. Grant, page 44, figure 28. Aside from cord replacement, the lamp is a rarefied, all original choice example.

Estimate: $5,000.00 - $6,000.00
