Description: Several items in the Art Glass portion of the sale come from the Ross C. Purdy Museum, a part of the American Ceramic Society in Westerville, Ohio. The ACS, founded in 1899, is dedicated to advances in the material science and the artistic realities of ceramics. The Ross C. Purdy Museum, once the personal collection of ceramic engineer and noted author, Ross C. Purdy was opened in 1981. In recent years, the ACS has transferred most of the collection to either the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, California or the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. The ACS will maintain a small display of glass and ceramics at it’s headquarters but since it no longer maintains a museum, it was decided to offer items in storage to those collectors who would appreciate them. Frederick Carder Cire perdue cast sculpture, a pair of Neptune’s spirited stallions rising from turbulent oceanic swells. Height is 6 1/2 inches tall. The base measures 7 1/4 inches by 5 5/8 inches and the hoofs of one of one stallion extends an inch beyond the plinth. The bottom is engraved F. Carder, 1939 by Mr. Carder’s hand. Both front legs of one stallion have been broken off and reset also chips to one ear and a lower lip. The plinth has chips on the two back corners. The acquisition number from the Ross C. Purdy Museum Collection is on the plinth. Referenced in Frederic Carder and Steuben Glass by Thomas Dimitroff, Carder gave cire perdue pieces to friends and organizations and on page 108 documents the American Ceramic Society (Ross C. Purdy Museum) as the grantee of Neptune’s Horses. Not often seen and aside the issues an imposing sculpture.
