Lot No. 1491

Manufacturer: Davidson

Artist: Herbert Davidson

Description: Herbert Laurence Davidson (American, Illinois, Chicago, 1930 - present) oil painting on canvas entitled “The Colonel’s Batman” showing a young British cadet in dress uniform holding a white bird’s egg, posing in front of a scarred wall with the ER initials (Elizabeth Regina) the symbol of British Monarchy. Batman is a now archaic term for an officer’s personal assistant, a position now obsolete in the British ranks. We do not know the symbolism of the bird’s egg nor the insignia on the cadet’s cap but we do recognize the fine way Davidson works with light and texture. The background wall is reminiscent of the egg tempera work of Robert Vickrey. Sight size is 21 3/8 by 16 3/8 inches and overall size with newer frame and linen liner is 28 by 23 inches. Excellent condition.

Estimate: $2,500.00 - $3,500.00
