Description: Reginald L. Grooms (American, Cincinnati, 1900-1989) egg tempera on masonite entitled “Amish Youth.” Grooms was a graduate of the Cincinnati Art Academy having studied with Johnny Weis, Herman and Bessie Wessell and James Roy Hopkins. He later studied at Academie Julian in Paris before retuning to Cincinnati to teach at at the Art Academy and later, for many years at University of Cincinnati. Grooms spent much of the Summer in 1938 in the York-Lancaster area of Pennsylvania doing sketches of the Amish community. One of the paintings from that group, “After Sunday Service” was exhibited in the Golden Gate Exhibition in 1939 and another, “Groom Toss” was exhibited in the 1939 New York World’s Fair. This work is part of his Amish series done in 1938 and 1939 and is signed upper right. Sight size is 27 1/2 by 21 1/4 and overall size with newer frame is 33 by 27 inches. Excellent condition. The work has been cleaned and varnished and framed within the last 10 years. Purchased directly from the artist in 1985 by the consignor.
