Artist: Siegfried Gerhard Reinhardt

Description: Siegfried Gerhard Reinhardt (German, American, St. Louis, 1925 - 1984) oil on masonite entitled “Jesus Supporting the Weight of Modern Civilization” done in 1952. The early work by Reinhardt features oil and metal leaf depicting Jesus struggling to carry a monstrous gear while surrounded by an ominous group of taunters. Typical of his early work is the use of string (in this case rope) and intricate detail, especially in fabric. Signed and dated lower right. Sight size is 14 1/4 by 30 3/8 inches. Overall size with the artist’s crafted original frame is 22 3/4 by 39 inches. Painting has recently been cleaned and the frame refurbished. This painting was traded by Reinhardt for a set of new tires shortly after its completion. He was teaching at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale at the time.
