Lot No. 0531

Manufacturer: Jon Whitcomb

Artist: Jon Whitcomb

Description: Jon Whitcomb (American, Oklahoma, Ohio, Connecticut, 1906 - 1988) oil on board possibly titled “Women’s Work.” Born in Oklahoma, Whitcomb graduated from The Ohio State University and served in the Navy during WW II. He is best known for his magazine cover illustrations, particularly those featuring beautiful women which he did for Redbook, McCalls and Ladies Home Journal. This work seems to have been done for British publication, John Bull Magazine which operated from the early 1940’s until 1960. Attached to the back of the painting is an original photo of the work with the following notation: “cover (398) Winter’s....”Women’s Work.” A small sticker over the note reads (Bull Winter 6959 Cover)and there is another sticker which reads “Chanticleer U.S. Origin.” Whether the painting was ever used as a cover is unknown. The subject of the painting is a nicely dressed young woman, perhaps involved in fashion design as there are pinned up drawings of dresses behind her. Signed in the upper right hand corner by the artist. Sight size is 20 1/2 by 13 inches. Overall size with frame is 28 1/4 by 20 1/2 inches. Excellent condition with new, metal frame.

Estimate: $750.00 - $1,000.00
