Lot No. 1201
Rare and impressive Rookwood Porcelain vase with colorful birds and berries painted by Sara Sax in 1922. A profusion of red berries hang from branches while two red and blue birds fly in for a snack. Marks include the company logo, the date, shape number 2247 C and the incised monogram of the artist. Height 13 5/8 inches. Uncrazed with a few very minor scratches. There is a question about how to describe the glaze. It has the blue blush of a Black Opal and the rich red of a French Red but I am reluctant to call it either. I think this falls into the “...a rose by any other name would smell as sweet...” category. Very sweet.
