Lot No. 1009

Manufacturer: Rookwood

Artist: Joseph Bailey, Sr.

Description: Rare 4 1/2 inch vase which has been covered with “Bailey’s Red” glaze in 1895. Marked with the Rookwood symbol, the date and a W for white clay. Rookwood Pottery made continuous efforts to replicate the elusive Chinese Oxblood glaze and they experimented with copper luster in the mid 1890s to obtain this brilliant red. Several examples of Joseph Bailey Sr.’s attempts at oxblood are noted in Burt’s ledger, but few are known to have survived. This example has a wonderful coppery red glaze which is very even and bright. A 1/2 inch base chip has been restored. Pictured in Ken Forster’s “University of North Dakota Pottery: A History and Comparative Study” on page 176.

Estimate: $900.00 - $1,200.00
