Lot No. 1304
Artist: E.T. Hurley
Description: Fabulous “Watercolor” style porcelain vase decorated by E.T. Hurley in 1923. Hurley did a lot of vases in this style during the 1920’s with birds and exotic foliage as the main theme. Here we have an equally amazing offering but with seaweed and some colorful and bizarre fish. There are five fish done in blues, purples, greens and golds under the glaze. Typically this type of work requires multiple firings for the several layers of glaze. Marks include the Rookwood logo, the date, shape number 2246 C and Mr. Hurley’s initials in black slip. Height 14 1/4 inches. Uncrazed and very clean. Exhibited in “Toward the Modern Style Rookwood Pottery The Later Years: 1915 - 1950” a seminal show of Rookwood done at The Jordan-Volpe Gallery in New York in 1983. Pictured on the frontispiece.
Size: 14 1/4
