Artist: A.R. Valentien

Description: Tall Standard glaze vase with finely detailed chestnut decoration done in 1891 by Albert Valentien. Leaves, stems and a single spiny chestnut pod are arrayed, mostly on the broad shoulder of the vase. Marks include the Rookwood logo and date, shape number 537 C, impressed W for white clay, an incised L for light Standard glaze, the incised initials of the artist and a paper label from the Jordan-Volpe Gallery. Exhibited in Jordan-Volpe’s “Ode to Nature: Flowers and Landscapes of the Rookwood Pottery 1880-1940” and pictured on color plate 2 of the catalog.
