Lot No. 0915
Unique Rookwood Architectural Faience overmantel with a tasteful Arts & Crafts scene of mountains, a lake, stately pines and wild roses, quite possibly done by Sallie Toohey, circa 1910. The arched scene is deeply carved and quite colorful. Marks include the Rookwood logo and Faience Department numbers “1352 Y” and “E 943 A” Each tile also bears a sequential number to aid in installation. Height at the top of the arch is 22 3/4 inches and width is 42 1/2 inches. There are some minor edge chips but no structural issues and nearly no residue on the backs. Richard Mohr’s article in the Spring issue of Journal of the American Art Pottery Association entitled “Rookwood Faience Tiles: Their History, Desigers, Techniques, and Styles - Part II” shows a similar scene by Toohey on page 13.
