Artist: A.R. Valentien

Description: Interesting Dull Finish (Smear Glaze) pitcher decorated by Albert Valentien in 1884 in the Chaplet style, having incised clouds and flowers, the clouds being outlined in gold and colored brown. Impressed Rookwood in block letters, the date, a G for ginger clay and a kiln mark and bearing Cincinnati Art Museum numbers in red as well as bearing the artist monogram in black slip. In excellent, original condition. Listed in Stanley Burt’s “2,292 Pieces of Early Rookwood Pottery in the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1916” as item 16 for the year 1884. This item sold as Lot 281 in the historic Glover Collection Auction in 1991. Height is 8 1/8 inches.
