Lot No. 0372
Monumental Zsolnay secessionist granite ware tankard, a Sandor Abt design made around 1903. The arrowroot designs, vines and vertical buttresses around the base are done in varied Eosin glazes which contrast nicely with the speckled granite ware ground. Marked with the Zsolnay raised wafer seal which is typically obscured by this glaze. There is also an illegible paper label on the bottom which may be original to the piece. Height 23 1/2 inches. The same form with different coloring is pictured on page 102 in “Zsolnay Szecesszios Keramiak” by Eva Csenkey published by Helikon in 1992. Professional restoration to a few of the glazed vertical buttresses near the base and a tiny rough area on the back edge of the spout. There is also restoration to a small chip on the back edge of the handle.
