Artist: Albert R. Valentien

Description: Unusual Rookwood Standard Glaze lidded punch bowl, a special order possibly for Senator Robert Taft of Ohio, son of President William Howard Taft, decorated by Albert Valentien in 1890. Encircling both the bowl and the lid are finely detailed grape vines, leaves and grapes. Thick, heart shaped, handles are applied to opposite sides of the body. Marks include the Rookwood logo and date code, Special shape number S 903, impressed W for white clay, incised L for Light Standard Glaze and the incised initials of the artist. Height 16 1/4 inches. There is some crazing and a very tight line at the rim by one of the handles. The bowl was a gift to Senator Taft’s housekeeper and acquired from her by the present owner.
